Smartphone Competition: Terms and Conditions

The Alliance Française de Harare and the Zimbabwe International Film Festival Trust are the Promoters of the Zimbabwe Smartphone Short Film Competition. The Smartphone Short Film Competition is open to all Zimbabweans aged 16 to 34 years and resident in Zimbabwe.

DEADLINE: Entrants must submit their films by midnight Wednesday 23rd May 2018

  • Competition participation is free of charge.
  • Only one film per entrant will be accepted.
  • The film must be shot using a Smartphone.
  • The film must not exceed 4 minutes, including credits.
  • All genres accepted.
  • Entries must be based on the theme “Being Zimbabwean”/“Être Zimbabwéen”.
  • The Film must not contain political or religious content; nor promote any politician or political party, religious organisation or religious leader.
  • Only one film per entrant will be accepted.
  • The film must be shot using a Smartphone.
  • Competition participation is free of charge.

  • Films can be in any one of the following video formats: MP4, AVI, WMV.

It is permissible to use any software for editing, post-production or treatment of images. It is permissible to use external devices for audio recording. Films can be in any of the Official Zimbabwean languages (Chewa, Chibarwe, English, Kalanga, Koisan, Nambya, Ndau, Ndebele, Shangani, Shona, Sign Language, Sotho, Tonga, Tswana, Venda, Xhosa) and or French.

Any entry’s deemed found to be defamatory or discriminatory will be disqualified at the discretion of the Promoters. Films must be entrant’s own original work and must not have been previously published or distributed in any form. 18. The work must not infringe the copyright, trademark, privacy, publicity, or other personal or proprietary rights of any person or entity. Entrant must have permission from all individuals featured in the film and all individuals must have been made aware of entry to the competition. Any issue(s) that may arise due to the infringement of copyrights is the entrant’s sole responsibility. The Promoters will not be responsible for any infringement of copyrights. Entrant is responsible for ensuring all relevant permits have been obtained when developing the film. Entrant consents to grant free, non-exclusive, unlimited online and broadcast use of work submitted to the Promoters for non-commercial information and promotional purposes. Entrant shall indemnify the Promoters from any third-party claims, actions or proceedings of any kind and from any damages, liabilities and costs related to or arising out of breach of any of the agreements of entrant hereunder.

Adjudication: Promoters will appoint a Jury for the selection of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Prize winners.

Evaluation criteria: Storytelling, relevance to subject, cinematography (lighting/camera angle), film editing, sound and music.
A selection of films will be screened daily at Alliance Française de Harare between June and July 2018 (Exact dates TBA). The selection will also be screened during the 2018 Zimbabwe International Film Festival in September 2018 (dates and venue TBA)

The winners: 1st Prize, 2nd Prize, and 3rd Prize will be awarded cash prizes of US$ 500, US$ 300 and US$ 200 respectively. (Date and venue TBA). The People’s Choice will be awarded $ 100. In addition, the top 10 entrants will receive Mentorship and Content Development support to develop their film into 20-30 minutes long short films.
